A 20-year-old Toronto man has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder in connection to the shooting death of Sirac Tesfay.

Tesfay was killed on Jan. 29 in the area of Mathersfield Drive, southeast of Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue, at about 8 p.m. A 27-year-old woman was also injured in the shooting and was taken to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries.

Tesfay was the city’s fourth homicide victim of 2021.

In a tribute made on an obituary website, his elementary school remembered him as an “outstanding athlete, great student, and kind and loving boy.”

“He always put a smile on the faces of those around him,” the tribute from Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Elementary School read.

Witnesses reported seeing a smaller light-coloured, possibly grey or silver, four-door sedan with dark tinted windows leaving the area in a northbound direction on Yonge at a high rate of speed.

On March 30, 20-year-old Toronto resident Henok Mesgena was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.

He appeared in court on March 31.
