Homicide investigators have been called to Surrey after human remains were found in a ditch.
Mounties said they were called to the area of 48th Avenue west of 168th Street Friday morning.
They were called to assist firefighters in the area, who’d arrived at around 4:20 a.m. after a report of a fire in a ditch.
First responders discovered the remains at the scene.
One person is in custody. Police have not identified the man, but said he was arrested at a home in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood at 5 a.m.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been called to investigate and the scene on 48 Avenue will likely be cordoned off “for a significant amount of time,” the RCMP said.
While police have not speculated publicly on a possible motive, they said they don’t believe the incident was random.
They do not believe the incident has ties to the ongoing gang conflict in B.C.’s Lower Mainland.
Anyone with more information is asked to contact IHIT or Crime Stoppers.
