It’s the lowest daily COVID-19 new case count that local residents have seen in a long time.
The data posted by Halton Public Health on Sunday (May 23) shows there are 49 new COVID-19 infections, down from yesterday’s total of 77 and notably lower than the triple-digit daily new cases that had become common throughout the third wave.
The new cases include 17 in Burlington, five in Halton Hills, 20 in Milton and seven in Oakville, with almost all of the infections in residents under the age of 60.
The number of cases overall linked to a COVID-19 variant went up slightly to 5,482 from yesterday’s 5,441.
The latest update from Halton Healthcare and Joseph Brant hospitals indicates that the number of patients hospitalized in the region with COVID-19 is 62. This includes 28 patients in Oakville, 17 in Milton, 11 in Burlington and six in Georgetown.
There are currently four long-term care homes and retirement homes in Halton listed as having active outbreaks: Billings Court Manor and Creek Way Village in Burlington, along with V!Va Oakville Retirement Community and Northridge in Oakville.
One child-care centre, one school, one congregate living setting and 19 workplaces across Halton are also reported to have open outbreaks.
Since the pandemic began, there have been 17,251 COVID-19 cases in the region, with 16,589 classified as resolved, 439 still active and 223 deceased.
Of these deaths, 55 were in Burlington, 57 in Halton Hills, 46 in Milton and 65 in Oakville.
Here’s a full breakdown of Halton’s numbers:
• Burlington: 4,204 confirmed and 128 probable cases, with 4,132 recoveries and 145 active cases
• Halton Hills: 1,780 confirmed and 58 probable cases, with 1,749 resolved and 32 active cases
• Milton: 5,398 confirmed and 210 probable cases, with 5,430 recoveries and 132 active cases
• Oakville: 5,290 confirmed and 183 probable cases, with 5,278 resolved and 130 active cases.
Halton Public Health has posted a notice that its COVID-19 dashboard will not be updated tomorrow as it’s a holiday, and that case counts may be higher than expected on Tuesday as a result.
