A two-alarm fire in the northwest Calgary community of Beddington Heights displaced six residents Sunday.
Fire crews were dispatched to the blaze on the 8300 block of Centre Street N.W. just before noon Sunday. There, they found one home fully engulfed in flames with a neighbour’s home threatened by the fire.
“Crews were actually able to get a quick knockdown, first with what we call an interior attack or an offensive attack,” said Calgary Fire Department battalion chief Bruce Barrs.
“Then we were able to do what we call a defensive strategy, where we set up an aerial latter and with an elevated master stream extinguish the fire we can’t reach from the ground.”
Wind conditions Sunday led to a “significant” degree of damage to the neighbour’s home, Barrs said.
Four people from the source home and two elderly women and a dog from the neighbouring home were displaced in the fire. No injuries were reported.
Barrs said about 40 firefighters and 15 firetrucks attended the blaze.
The fire is thought to have started at the exterior rear of the source home. Fire investigators remained on-scene Sunday afternoon to determine a cause of the fire and ensure it remains extinguished.
