The four people shot dead in a Richmond home were all adult members of the same immediate family and one of them had a firearms licence and a gun, police said on Thursday.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said all members of the home in the 4500 block of Garden City Road “have been accounted for” and police are not searching for any suspects, said spokesman Sgt. David Lee.

He called the shooting an “isolated incident” and said “it was not the result of intimate partner violence.”

And neither were the shootings or the family related to gang or criminal activity, he said.

Police did not identify the victims, pending notification of next of kin. Lee said one of the four had a firearms licence and access to a firearm.

Asked if police considered the crimes a murder-suicide, Lee said he “was not able to confirm that” without further investigation. He said all four are considered victims.

“The community is safe as we have confirmed this an isolated incident. There are no suspects at large,” Lee said in a news release.

Yellow police tape surrounded the property and the boulevard in front on Thursday morning, and there was an RCMP cruiser with an officer in it out front and a second cruiser around the back.

The home, a large pink-stucco two-storey side-by-side duplex housed a number of units. It sat on a large lot behind a tall hedge and set off from Garden City Road, with neighbours on either side.

A woman who answered the door in the home on one side said she didn’t know the family and didn’t hear anything on Monday evening, when police say the shooting is believed to have happened.

A neighbour who became suspicious about something called police on Tuesday evening and “RCMP responded right away,” said Lee.

Police served a search warrant on Wednesday to “further examine the scene with the assistance of the B.C. Coroners Service and the integrated forensic identification section,” the RCMP said in a news release.

IHIT officers are continuing to interview witnesses and are constructing a timeline. They have not determined a motive.

The B.C. assessment authority says the two-storey duplex is worth $2.1 million, double its 2018 purchase price.

A sign on a chain-link fence down the road from the home indicated part of the block is slated for redevelopment into condos and retail space.
