Drivers in British Columbia will move a little further into the 21st century this spring as provincial insurer ICBC introduces online renewal.
This means that ICBC customers with policies that expire on or after May 1 will be able to log in with a computer, smartphone, or tablet, and renew their insurance digitally. And with online renewal encouraged up to 44 days prior to the expiration date, some B.C. drivers will be able to use the system as of March 27.
“We know online insurance renewals are something our customers have been waiting for, and we’re pleased to announce that we’re on track to have this option go live next month,” announced ICBC president and CEO Nicolas Jimenez in a press release. “Online insurance renewals add to the growing number of digital options available to customers, providing greater convenience, choice, and flexibility for British Columbians.”
B.C. will also join Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, and the Northwest Territories when it officially ends the requirement for drivers to display insurance decals on their plates on May 1, 2022.
The B.C. government announcement states that the million-dollar cost of implementing the Automated Licence Plate Recognition Program will be offset by the savings from ending decal production.
Auto plan brokers, and therefore customers, will not see any savings from online registration.
