A section of Highway 3 west of Prince Albert, currently being upgraded to help reduce the number of serious collisions happening there, was the scene of a fatal crash Saturday night.
Police have confirmed a 72-year-old person was killed when the westbound mini-van she was driving, collided head-on with an eastbound truck. A man who lives nearby told paNOW he was startled by the sound of the crash.
“It was like a bomb went off. It was such a damn explosion,” he recalled.
The woman was the lone occupant in the mini-van, and there were two people in the truck.
Police said both were treated for minor injuries by Parkland Ambulance. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The neighbour, who went across the road and confirmed for paNOW there was a woman in the mini-van, described how the impact from the crash caused the eastbound truck to slide on his side down the highway.
He said when he and the other first responders checked on the woman, she had no visible injuries but no pulse.
Twinning work on Highway 3 from city limits to the Shell River bridge, is expected to wrap up in the fall.
The westbound lane is currently down to one lane for traffic. As a result, westbound travelers are being forced to drive on the shoulder.
