Winnipeg police have charged a 19-year-old woman with second-degree murder in the slaying of her boyfriend Friday.
Fire paramedic crews called police to an apartment building on the 500 block of Burnell Street after they found an injured man when responding to a fire alarm at 5:30 p.m. on July 15.
Logan Clarke, 18, was taken to hospital with upper-body injuries and later died.
Homicide detectives took over the investigation and arrested a suspect at a home in Wolseley on Wednesday.
Clarke graduated from R.B. Russell Vocational High School in June, the principal said in a message to students this week.
“Our thoughts are with Logan’s family and community during this difficult time,” principal Paul Krowiak wrote. “WSD resources will be available to students and staff when school reopens in September.”
Clarke had won many awards at the school, and was known by most staff and students, Krowiak said.
His family lit a sacred fire at Macdonald Youth Services, which will burn until Friday.
On Thursday, a man tended to the flames near framed photographs of the victim.
The fire was encircled by lawn chairs; bundles of wood were stacked against a wall. Nearby, food and drinks were on a picnic table for those who paid their respects.
Clarke’s killing was Winnipeg’s 29th homicide of the year. At this point last year, 20 people had been slain.
Eliah Moonlight Olson, 19, of Winnipeg, is charged with second-degree murder and failing to comply with a probation order. She was detained in custody.
Investigators believe Clarke and the accused got into an altercation, which led to the stabbing.
He was the second person killed on July 15. Earlier that day at 11 a.m., police officers were called to a hotel on the 1600 block of Regent Avenue West where they found Belton Mason, 33, of St. Theresa Pointe, dead in a suite. Homicide detectives charged a 17-year-old from the same community with manslaughter.
Court records show Olson was convicted for breaching a no-contact order, which was unrelated to Clarke. She was sentenced to nine days in custody in March 2021.
