Calgary: Man in life-threatening condition following late night shooting

Authorities are looking for suspects following another shooting in Calgary.

Calgary police, along with EMS, were called to the scene, near 14 Avenue and 28 Street S.E. Saturday evening.

When they arrived, they found an adult male suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

He was taken to Foothills Medical Centre in serious, life-threatening condition.

Police blocked off an alleyway between 14 and 15 Avenue between 28 and 27 Street for the investigation.

Oliver Pantherbone’s home backs onto the alley where the shooting occurred.

“All I heard was a, ‘thump,'” he said.

He says he was watching TV with his granddaughter, when the sound made him look out his window. He says he saw three to four young adult males standing in the alleyway.

“We were watching, and wondered, ‘What if that guy (saw) us and starts shooting at us?’ It’s crazy,” he said.

Pantherbone adds that the car involved made a quick exit from the alley.

“That car took off, and it just boogied right down this road – just took off real fast.”

He says emergency personnel responded within minutes, and one man was taken to hospital.

“He was on the stretcher,” he said. “You could see where he got hit.”

Ward 5 Coun. George Chahal is heading up a crime prevention task force and said Friday there had been a total of 54 shootings in Calgary to date. Sunday’s incident would be the 55th.

“We’re going to roll up our sleeves, and work hard together to find meaningful solutions and recommendations and take action,” said Chahal. “It’s not something we’re going to solve overnight, it’s going to take time.”

As for Pantherbone, he says he’s planning on moving away from the area.

“This neighbourhood is crazy man,” he said. “Stabbings, shootings – my cousin who lives on the other side over there, was attacked with machetes.”
