New cases of COVID-19 are being found in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, but active cases of the disease are beginning to drop.

Manitoba reported four new COVID-19 cases August 11, but six more people were reported recovered from the disease, dropping the number of active Manitoba cases from 196 Monday to 194.

Out of the four new cases, two were found in the Prairie Mountain Health region and one was found in Winnipeg. Cases within Prairie Mountain Health (specifically, in the Brandon area) have made up a majority of new cases in the province in recent days, with one outbreak tied to a Maple Leaf meat processing plant in the city. Another outbreak in Brandon, linked to a Tim Hortons on the Trans-Canada Highway, has been expanded – health officials have reported possible exposure not only on August 1, but August 3-4 as well.

Testing has ramped up in southern Manitoba, with almost 5,000 tests done between Friday and Sunday. Another 1,059 tests were processed August 10. Manitoba has now reported 562 cases of COVID-19 during the pandemic.

In Saskatchewan, the number of new cases and recoveries were the same – 29 each. The most cases found in any Saskatchewan region were in Saskatoon, where 17 more people now have COVID-19. Four people in both Regina and in south west Saskatchewan have tested positive, along with three people in south central regions and the north west.

Eleven of the 17 cases found in Saskatoon are not in the city itself, but in what the province called a “communal living situation” outside the city.

Saskatchewan currently has 165 active cases of COVID-19, lower than the number in Manitoba. During the pandemic, Saskatchewan has reported 1,479 cases of COVID-19. Only one active case remains in the far north, located in western Saskatchewan.
