Dr. Theresa Tam told Canadians to consider wearing face masks while doing the dirty to protect oneself from catching the coronavirus.
Tam told media on Wednesday that while there is low chance of being infected (by coronavirus) from vaginal fluid or sperm, hot hookups should skip kissing all together, and that wearing a mask remains the best option, reports Reuters.
Oddly though, Tam did not say whether condoms would help slow the spread.
“Like other activities during COVID-19 that involve physical closeness, there are some things you can do to minimize the risk of getting infected and spreading the virus… The lowest risk sexual activity during COVID-19 involves yourself alone,” said Tam.
Tam noted that Canadians could still “find ways to enjoy physical intimacy while safeguarding the progress we have all made containing COVID-19.”
Similarly, the British Columbia safe sex guidelines released in July advocated for the use of glory holes to avoid face-to-face contact.
Under the heading “steps to protect yourself during sex,” the government advised citizens to “use barriers, like walls (e.g., glory holes), that allow for sexual contact but prevent close face-to-face contact.”
A “glory hole” is defined as 1) “An untidy storage place, especially a room or cupboard.” 2) “A small furnace used to keep glass malleable so that it can be worked.”
The BC Centre for Disease Control described the holes as: “A hole in a wall through which fellatio or masturbation is conducted incognito.”
The rest of the safe sex primer addresses other ways of engaging in intimacy, such as “sexting,” “online chat rooms and group cam rooms,” both of which, BC notes, have no chance of spreading the virus. If you’re concerned about safety, the guidelines say that when camming, you don’t have to show your face.
