The Brant County Health Unit reported one new local case of COVID-19 on Wednesday.
The positive test rings to 188 the number of cases in the community since the start of the pandemic. Of those, 167 cases have been resolved, according to the health unit’s statistics.
At present, there are 16 active cases in the community.
There have been five COVID-19 deaths in Brantford-Brant since the pandemic began.
Outbreaks remain in place at Cobblestone Elementary School in Paris where two students tested positive for the virus, and at Charlotte Village Retirement Home on Charlotte Street where one staff member tested positive.
There have now been 14 health unit-declared outbreaks at schools, day-care centres, long-term care homes, retirement homes and the hospital with all but two kept to just one or two cases.
In May, an outbreak at the BGH infected nine staff and one patient. In April, when the virus was at a peak, two staff and two patients were infected and both patients died.
Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 tests conducted locally is nearing the 30,000 mark.
According to the latest figures, 28,941 tests have been conducted in Brantford-Brant, with most — 24,872 — performed at the Brant Community Healthcare System’s COVID assessment centre. The balance of tests were conducted at congregate settings, such as group, retirement and long-term care homes.
The assessment centre was moved Monday from Brantford General Hospital to the civic centre auditorium to accommodate more people.
The centre has expanded operating hours of 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends.
People are encouraged to make an appointment. Walk-ins are not accepted after 4 p.m.
