The Ontario government is imposing visitation and absence restrictions on 28 long-term-care homes in York Region as the area moves to modified Stage 2 protocols to control COVID-19.
The restrictions come into effect on Monday. Visits will be restricted to essential visitors and caregivers, and short-term and temporary absences will only be allowed for medical or compassionate reasons.
“We recognize that these restrictions are being introduced just one week after we announced new measures for the city of Toronto, the region of Peel, and the city of Ottawa,” said Merrilee Fullerton, Minister of Long-Term Care in a news release. “We also know we must act fast to address changing conditions to protect the residents and staff in Ontario’s long-term care homes.”
A list of the facilities affected is posted on the province’s COVID-19 information website.
Those planning on visiting a long-term-care home are advised to call ahead for details on outbreaks and visiting restrictions.
On Friday, Premier Doug Ford added York Region to the list of COVID-19 hot spots that have reverted to a modified Stage 2 after a surge in cases.
In addition to the restrictions on long-term care, indoor dining, gyms and movie theatres have also been ordered closed for 28 days starting Monday.
