The coronavirus pandemic isn’t going to stop children from having a merry Christmas this year.
Attendees at the fifth annual Christmas Wish Breakfast Sunday were asked to bring a toy and be treated to a to-go style breakfast.
Breakfast organizing committee chair Lynn Van Laar said the breakfast was planned outside at Westerner Park this year to minimize the risk of COVID-19.
The organizers requested breakfast goers to place their donation – in the trunk of their vehicle – which were then collected upon entry. Upon arrival, drivers were asked to pop the trunk so volunteers can collect the toy with no contact.
They were asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy, which will be provided to the Salvation Army and the Red Deer Christmas Bureau.
The breakfast was served in a drive-thru, take away style.
The Sunday breakfast started at 8 a.m. and was due to end at 11 a.m. Van Laar confirmed 300 people had already driven by around 10 a.m.
“Previous years we have a lot more but it’s different this year is different due to COVID. But we’re all very happy and everybody here is having a good time staying safe and warm.”
The organizer expected the last hour to be the busiest one.
“Anything we have is very much appreciated.”
