In an Alberta COVID-19 update on Monday, December 8, Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced that the province has surpassed its previous record of 20,000 active cases to land at a whopping 20,067.
Alberta currently has a series of temporary enhanced measures in place to curb the spread of COVID-19 including gathering restrictions and updated business protocols.
The top doctor made it clear that these restrictions will not suffice “to bring down our numbers.”
While she said more restrictions are needed, she continued to explain that the question lies in “the exact restrictions that are needed.”
She said that she and her team will again be making recommendations to Jason Kenney and his cabinet in the coming days.
The health official also announced 1,735 new cases on Monday, which is actually down from the day prior.
The Edmonton Zone is leading the province for active cases with a current count of 9,190, followed by the Calgary Zone at 7,472.
Hinshaw made a plea to the public: “The measures that are currently in place that are provincewide really do need to be respected and followed everywhere in the province.”
