Coronavirus Canada Updates: Military assistance sent to aid Manitoba First Nation COVID-19 outbreak

A team of approximately six military reservists will head to a First Nation in Manitoba to help with the community’s COVID-19 response.

The military says in an email that its assistance to Shamattawa will include distributing food, firewood, and care packages, as well as providing information and transportation.

Shamattawa Chief Eric Redhead posted online Friday that there were 117 active infections in the community of about 1100, saying they were “literally at a breaking point.”

MKO Grand Chief Garrison Settee says in a statement that members of the Bear Clan and the Canadian Red Cross were also arriving in Shamattawa this weekend to help.
