Alberta reported 1,562 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday (April 24) and more than two-thirds of them were variants of concern.
Variants accounted for 1,132 of yesterday’s cases and now are responsible for 60.9 percent of the province’s 19,702 active cases. The number of active cases in Alberta rose by 256 on Saturday.
In the last 24 hours, Alberta administered 17,725 lab tests to try to find the virus in people, which makes the provincial positivity rate on Saturday nearly nine percent.
Five additional deaths among Albertans were reported yesterday bringing the total to 2,064. 584 people are now hospitalized in the province from coronavirus, an increase of 35 from Friday. ICU patients went up by four to 129.
The Calgary Zone accounts for the majority of active cases. The zone has 8,283 cases with 320 of them in the City of Airdrie. On Friday Airdrie’s count was 312.
Active cases in Rocky View County were unchanged from Friday with 168.
Vaccination sites across the province administered 41,528 doses of COVID-19 vaccines on Friday bringing the provincial total to 1,361,365.
