The Toronto Police Service’s (TPS) dedicated COVID-19 enforcement teams laid over 200 charges against people breaking the Stay-at-Home order in their first week of operation.
Since their launch on April 22, the 16 enforcement teams have laid 230 charges under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMCPA).
TPS said officers have responded to a total of 315 incidents to date, including 105 calls for gatherings since Monday.
“We have an enforcement team in every division across the city,” said Inspector Matt Moyer.
“Officers are dispersing large gatherings daily and laying charges against those who are ignoring the emergency order.”
Most calls have come from Toronto’s downtown core, although officers have responded to incidents across the city.
TPS said their enforcement has been focused on large indoor events that are being held at short-term rentals, bars, and restaurants.
Under Ontario’s Stay-at-Home order, indoor and outdoor gatherings can only be held with members of the same household.
“As we head in to the weekend, we are discouraging anyone who is thinking of attending or hosting a gathering, and reminding them that, if they do, they may very well expect the police in attendance as well,” Moyer said.
“Please work with us to keep the city safe. Don’t attend parties or large gatherings. Stay home and stay safe.”
