Coronavirus Updates: Travellers Entering Canada May Be Visited By An Official During Their Quarantine

According to the federal government, travellers entering Canada should expect a visit from a “Screening Officer” during their mandatory two-week quarantine.

In a new notice, shared via Twitter, Health Canada confirmed that officials would be checking in on those who have recently entered the country from overseas.

The federal agency explained that screening officers would be visiting the quarantine location of those who have recently travelled abroad, to ensure they are isolating as per the Quarantine Act rules.

Earlier this year, the government revealed that hundreds of new officers had been assigned to Canada’s airports to keep the country’s borders “secure.”

Health Canada also noted that the penalties for failing to comply are pretty hefty, including fines of up to $750,000 and even jail time.

This comes just days after Justin Trudeau confirmed that Canada’s travel restrictions would be tightened.

In addition to stronger controls at land borders, there are now additional quarantine restrictions for anybody entering the country via plane.

Incoming passengers will now be required to quarantine for several days in a government-approved location and will also be expected to foot the bill for all costs associated with travelling right now.
