Police: Trench collapse in Ajax leaves two dead

Two men are dead after being trapped in a collapsed trench in Ajax.

Their bodies were finally pulled from the trench by fire crews near Rossland Road and Westney Road around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Durham police say the collapse happened just before noon Monday.

Initially, two workers, both men, were taken to hospital.

One was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries while the other was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The other two workers remained trapped at the time.

The Ministry of Labour is investigating.
