Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has identified 60-year-old Gary Brohman of Gore Bay as the person who was fatally shot during the incident on Manitoulin Island this past Thursday where Const. Marc Hovingh, a 28-year member of the OPP, also suffered a fatal gunshot wound.
The SIU said it released Brohman’s name in accordance with policy that requires consent from next of kin.
Post-mortems are underway in Toronto, the agency said in a release, while investigators remain in the area and continue to process the scene. Three civilian witnesses have been interviewed.
The SIU, a civilian agency with a mandate to investigate reports involving police where there has been a death, injury, or an allegation of sexual assault, has taken the lead in the investigation, with assistance from the Greater Sudbury Police.
Marc Hovingh, a 52-year-old father of four, died after he was shot while investigating a call about an unwanted man on a property in Gore Bay on Thursday morning, prompting an outpouring of grief and several tributes to the longtime officer.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about the investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website, www.siu.on.ca.
