'The Mandalorian' Season 2 Finale: Boba Fett show headed to Disney Plus in 2021

Just two weeks after Boba Fett made his triumphant, action-packed return to the Star Wars universe on The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm and Disney have revealed that everyone’s favorite bounty hunter is getting his own series in 2021. The show, titled The Book of Boba Fett, was announced in tandem with The Mandalorian season 2 finale.

Chapter 16, “The Rescue,” had a post-credit scene stinger. If you haven’t watched it, you may want to hold off on the rest of this news.

In the after credits scene, Boba Fett and Fennec Shand return to Tatooine to take care of unfinished business. The series whisks us back to Jabba’s palace, where Boba was unceremoniously catapulted into the sarlacc pit years before. After blasting away a few guards, the duo encounter a bloated Bib Fortuna sitting on the throne. (And ordering around his minions with commands like “maclunkey!”) While the Twi’lek remembers Boba instantly, the ex-bounty hunter wastes approximately zero breath explaining how he survived. Boba shoots the alien dead before assuming his place on the throne in what might be the most pulp, Frank Frazetta-ish book cover moment in Star Wars history.

Rumors began swirling in early last month that Lucasfilm and Disney were considering a spinoff series starring the famed Bounty Hunter. Shooting was even pegged to begin by the end of November. But during Disney’s 2020 Investors Day call, in which Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced plans for 9 new Star Wars shows including The Mandalorian spinoffs The Rangers of the New Republic and Ahsoka, a breakout starring Boba actor Temuera Morrison was nowhere to be found.

Now we know why. Instead of going the subtle Marvel route, Jon Favreau and his crew put a name and date on the series. The Book of Boba Fett will arrives in December 2021.

While the series will have dozens of decommissioned “Legends” canon stories to draw inspiration from — he even once took Han Solo’s daughter Jaina under his wing! — the official post-Disney canon is pretty light on Boba Fett facts. From the looks of it, Boba will be making waves on Tatooine for at least the beginning of his new series as he destroys the criminal underworld from the inside.

Disney did not follow the stinger with any formal announcement at the time of publication, so it’s unclear if there’s a new creative team behind the series. Favreau and Star Wars stalwart Dave Filoni will produce a number of the other announced Lucasfilm series for Disney Plus, so there’s a strong possibility they’ll oversee the spinoff. Temuera Morrison is expected to reprise his role. On top of being a logical regular for The Book of Boba Fett, Ming-Na Wen is also set to return as Fennec Shand in a voice role on the upcoming Clone Wars sequel series The Bad Batch.
