Police are investigating after a 12-year-old boy was stabbed to death in Winnipeg on Friday night.
Police say they received numerous reports of a stabbing at 7:19 p.m. on Burrows Avenue, just east of Main Street.
Officers found the injured 12-year-old in the road being attended to by an off-duty nurse, who happened to be in the area.
The victim, who is from Winnipeg, was transported to hospital and later died of his injuries.
“Incidents like this absolutely shock the community,” said Const. Jay Murray. “There’s going to be a lot of discussion in the coming days about this incident. The victims that have been affected, whether it was the family, the victim himself, friends, the community, it’s quite an awful incident.
“I don’t know that I can find a word to accurately describe it.”
It was the city’s 11th homicide since May 19, according to police.
“It’s concerning to see numbers rising again in terms of violence and homicide,” said Murray.
WPS believe two groups were involved in an altercation that led to the stabbing.
“We believe at this time, there’s indications that these groups may have not known each other before the homicide,” said Murray. We can’t say for sure at this point. But we haven’t established a specific threat to the public.”
The police’s homicide unit is investigating.
